The Reason Society Must End the Busyness Cult.
Everyone in the world today appears to make a badge of honor of wearing busy. People boast of working hard, eating not, and living on very few sleep hours as though fatigue is a sign of success. At some point, we began to associate productivity with self-worth, and it is ruining our well-being.
Being busy all the time does not imply that you are doing more, it tends to imply that you are overloaded. Our schedules are full of activities, appointments and commitments and we have no time to relax or introspect. The result? Fatigue, stress, and loss of pleasure in day to day life.
Worse still, there is an encouragement of this way of life in society. The individual who works during lunch or responds through emails during midnight is usually commended concerning his commitment; the individual who sets boundaries is termed as unmotivated. However, the reality is that balance is more disciplined than burnout ever could be.
We have to abandon our obsession with being busy and learn to cherish rest, mindfulness and quality time. Fulfilment and not exhaustion should characterize success. When the next person tells us they are too busy, maybe it is time we ceased to admire him or her but ask why. It is not a competition of who can do more but live with a purpose, not being under pressure.
