Are Social Media Problems Killing More than Curing?
The issues of social media are almost a weekly occurrence, be it a viral stunt or a workout trend. Most of them have begun to blur the boundary between fun and harm although some of them are entertaining or create awareness on good causes.
The challenges usually encourage comparisons and unrealistic expectations. Such trends as fitness or glow-up may cause insecurity instead of inspiration. Risky activities, particularly among the adolescents, are even capable of causing bodily injuries. What starts as entertainment may at times culminate to pressure or high risk taking to get attention.
Platforms feed on this interaction causing users to be pushed to what is popular at the expense of what is healthy. The outcome is a vicious circle of individuals seeking confirmation in likes rather than attachment. We hardly ever take time to question whether such trends can contribute value to our lives or whether they are just a form of distraction in life.
It does not mean that all adversities are bad. Others such as the charitable awareness campaigns do unbelievable work. The users should however take such trends with caution. The first thing to consider before joining one is whether it is an organization that encourages positivity or pressure.
The social media must be used to be creative and communal not conform. Otherwise, we will just be divided because of the very issues that are supposed to unite us.
